The African diaspora community is one of America's most diverse communities, inclusive of people who speak multiple languages, come from highly educated backgrounds, and practice various faiths. While unique culturally, the over 2 million African immigrants and people of African descent also share similar values: supporting their families, creating opportunities for their communities, and contributing to America's growth and prosperity.
Virginia alone is proud to be home to over 115,000 who are part of the African Diaspora. Not only are we the fastest-growing population of immigrants in the United States, with the number of African immigrants grew at a rate of almost 50% from 2010 to 2018, but thousands of the African Diaspora are small and medium business owners contributing to Virginia’s economic growth and job creation as well as over $205 million in international trade, which has aided in Virginia becoming the best state for business.
African Diaspora Virginians have made significant contributions through their leadership and work in government, service in our military, helping feed our community through agriculture, inspiring children as educators, are healthcare professionals, and advancing society through science and technology.
